We don’t get much distinct seasonal change here in Florida, especially the further south you are.  It stays pretty green here year round.  Some of us miss the seasons, and enjoy visiting places where it snows in winter and the leaves change in the fall.  When we received the theme Change of Season, although it was winter here, I found some fall right in my back yard! 

I have several Crape Myrtle trees that I purchased from the Agriculture students at the high school where I used to teach.  We planted them along our back fence.  In the summer they bloom, and in the winter the blooms are finished and the leaves change colors and fall off.

The decaying leaves are exquisite.

I based my design loosely on this photograph. 

Laying down a rough background got this composition started. 

After I ‘scribble’ stitched the background by machine, and built some stalks, I was ready to add the colorful leaves. 

At some point, I stuck a square scrap onto the background, and when I stood back, I liked it, so I added more.  Kind of gave it a bit of magic.

All the foreground pieces were hand appliqued and some embroidered veins gave the leaves detail and texture. 

At the end, I hated to box in this view with a traditional binding, so I just trimmed close to the machine stitching to give the work an irregular, organic edge. 

These lingering crape myrtle leaves delighted my eye.  I find it interesting to hear of a longing for color from those who live in extreme cold areas.  We who are surrounded by green most of the year enjoy occasional pops of fall and winter color in our region.

最後の万歳 ここフロリダでは、特に南に行くほど、はっきりとした季節の変化があまり見られません。 ここでは一年中美しい緑が保たれています。 季節を懐かしみ、冬には雪が降り、秋には紅葉する場所を訪れるのを楽しむ人もいます。 「季節の変わり目」というテーマをいただいたとき、ここは冬でしたが、裏庭に秋が見えてきました。 私にはサルスベリの木が数本あり、私がかつて教えていた高校の農学部の生徒から購入しました。 裏のフェンス沿いに植えました。 夏に花が咲き、冬には花が終わり、葉が色づいて落ちます。 夏の花はこんな感じです。 12月中旬の百日紅です。 一本の茎に何種類もの色の葉がついていることに驚きました。 朽ちた葉っぱが絶妙です。 私はこの写真を大まかにベースにしてデザインしました。 大まかな背景を敷くことからこの構図が始まりました。 ミシンで背景を「落書き」してステッチし、いくつかの茎を作成したら、色とりどりの葉を追加する準備が整いました。 ある時、背景に四角い端材を貼って、後ろに立ったときに気に入ったので追加しました。 ちょっとした魔法がかかりました。 前景の部分はすべて手作業でアップリケされ、葉脈の刺繍によって葉のディテールと質感が与えられています。 最後に、このビューで従来の装丁を使用してボックス化するのが嫌だったので、ミシンステッチの近くをトリミングして、作品に不規則で有機的なエッジを与えました。 残存するサルスベリの葉が私の目を楽しませてくれました。 極寒の地に住む人々の色への憧れを聞くのは興味深いです。 一年のほとんどを緑に囲まれている私たちは、この地域で時折現れるポップな秋冬の色彩を楽しんでいます。 最後の万歳 41×27インチ 手作業と機械によるアップリケとキルティング 商用およびアップサイクルされた綿生地、刺繍糸
