During celebrations, there is a custom in Japan to wrap cash.

At that time, a decorative string called “Mizuhiki” is tied to the envelope of Japanese paper.

It is a congratulatory meaning of “connecting people” and a desire to continue a good relationship.

When my daughter got engaged, her fiance’s parents gave her a gift called “Yuinou (betrothal)”.

This is an old custom in Japan, and fewer people do it now.

Some of them are “dried abalone”, “dried squid”, “dried bonito”, “twines”, “fan”, etc.

Auspicious items are wrapped in Japanese paper and tied with a Mizuhiki.

Later, I collected Mizuhiki and displayed it on a board with prayers for my daughter to have a happy marriage.

Mizuhiki is also used as a work of art as a gift for celebrations.

Colorful strings are tied in the shape of a congratulatory object and it will a happy new beginning.

  1. These are incredibly beautiful! I love that the memory of the day isn’t lost with the discarded wrappings, but repurposed as a keepsake. One of my favorite things about our group is getting to know some of the finer points about our unique cultures. Thank you for sharing this part of yours.
