As a child I had a friend whose mother made sandwiches by cutting them into triangles and removing the crusts…somehow this made them taste better to me. My children also appreciated the triangle cut sandwich, I kept the crusts on theirs because my grandmother taught me that is where the vitamins are and “There are children starving in India who would love that crust” As an adult the triangular tea sandwich experienced at high tea was fancy, delicate noting a special celebration.
As an adult living the sandwich years of the middle generation I wonder if in keeping the crust on my sandwich I am creating a protective shield, a container to hold myself within and some extra nourishment for the journey.
The Aspen trees representing shelter, growth and resilience during the cycles of life. The triangles symbolizing the balancing of past, present and future during periods of change. Disruption comes comes with both joys and sorrows…stillness opens the door to hope and stability and allows in the light needed for navigation.
The Fall Sandwich

To explore the generational sandwich and the change of seasons I layered photographs of two previous original works; a painting of Aspen trees and an art quilt exploring movement using triangular shapes.
What a debut into our artists group! Your metaphor of the Sandwich in view of generations is an interesting twist. It’s fascinating how you merged two different art pieces together (need to remember that…).
A perfect post, Jacque…love the story and the beautiful design/colour – a super collection of fabrics and many hours of piecing for the awesome artwork you have shared with us!
Jacque, I love the idea of merging the two pieces together! I wonder how much manipulation you did once they were layered. Brilliant results.
