Janine Ibbini. Revealed Quilts. Change of Season

As in other parts of the Earth, there’s really only two seasons in the UAE, summer and winter.

Its winter now and I can’t think of a better place to be.

I love the cooler days when we can stay out doors for most of the time.

We all love to see glorious clouds(!) and we love how clouds add interest and colour to skies.

Sometimes it rains in Winter!! When it does, we all rejoice. The desert puts on a show of tiny green shoots and flowers.

Camping in the Western Region deserts, spending amazing desert nights under skies filled with stars.

Swimming in the cold sea.

I love to see so many more migratory birds, who fly here for warmth. In the mornings my heart soars as I watch the small Terns fly from the mangroves where they roost for the night, over a small strip of sand and then out across the open sea of the Gulf.

When the tide recedes patterns are left in the sand, in my imagination, they look like the roots of trees. I have tried to interpret this with the quilted lines of my piece for this round.

  1. Janine, a beautiful representation of the UAE. Not only the sea and sand but the cool temperatures of winter and the scorching temperatures of summer. Your beautiful quilting depicts not only the ripples of the seabed but the undulations of the sands on the dunes. So many features of the UAE….Gorgeous!

  2. Hello Janine. “Along the Margin of sea and sand” is such an appropriate quilt to have worked on at this particular time. I love whole cloth quilts, and your added dimension of tray dyeing the fabric by hand has made it extra special, and your description of your environment is just magical.

  3. Janine, you bring us a very special sharing. I would like to know more about the area you call home! Your art is beautiful, and the tray dye – amazing. I love the perfection in the movement and colour!

Tell us what you think.
