Two years ago we moved from a large house into a new build apartment. In our home my wife and I each had our own studios. In the apartment my wife took over one of the bedrooms as her studio and I rented a studio in a Church. It didn’t take long for us to realize what we missed…..a beautiful garden to sit in and neighbours who would visit us on the porch. So…….we are moving back to a large townhouse next week. Concrete living is not for us! In the apartment we looked out the windows onto another concrete building next door. The only sign of greenery was a few weeds that tried to survive in between the bricks.

techniques… hand painted fabric, appliquéd layers of folded curves. Some hand embroidery

In my quilt I tried to depict the tall building with no personality, no colour and no greenery. Talk about “urban nature”. If you look closely you might see a few bits of greenery.

  1. Al, the delicate little bits of greenery in your work feel truly precious. Congratulations on your move to meet much more wonderful green surroundings.

  2. The fabrics and color palette are stunning! You brought beauty into an urban space. Best of luck on your move!

  3. Al, I know you well, and am so pleased that you both will be in your new home very soon. The artwork speaks to the design and colour of the garden and the city you have chosen. Welcome home!!

  4. Al, this is must have been an amazing realization, for you and your wife. Great interpretation of the concrete jungle with very little space for nature. I sometimes wish city dwellers could live in multi-story housing in the sense of Friedensreich Hundertwasser, – green wherever it is possible, vertically and horizontally.

  5. This is a brilliant and beautiful expression of the view even with its challenges. Moving to green seems important bravo for knowing this and choosing another way.
