When I saw the word “compromise” I wondered how I would relate that to my theme relating to my trip through the USA and Canada in 2019. Then the idea came that you often compromise with your partner when you are travelling as to what areas you visit and people that you see. I did this when my husband had a must do of Saratoga Springs to visit the Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame. We ended up working some dates and travel around this with me thinking it was a trade off with other places I wanted to visit. Little did I know that by agreeing to visit Saratoga Springs I would find a place that I would go back to in a heartbeat!

Wall art Hotel bedroom

We went to our hotel and were greeted by a fellow kiwi who was the duty manager when we came in. He heard or voices and immediately felt homesick so he upgraded our room which was wonderful. The art in the room was hexagons which immediately drew me to Patchwork so I decided to use this shape in my quilt to represent the line up of horse silks we saw outside the museum. I extended it also into the quilting lines.

I took the image of the silks on display and created my hexagons which I sat alongside rails which were quilted with little posts to represent the stables and the racetrack we visited.

Ballet Shoes
Silks

The town was a riot of colour with large ballet shoes throughout the centre of town to showcase the major ballet school and competitions held there. We often argue which is better: art or sport? But here in Saratoga Springs they live harmoniously together and the colours from along with the Springs and the trees give you a wonderful sense of Spring. The colours I have chosen for the work are very Spring like and quite bright for me.

So I am happy to compromise on my trips as I never know what jewels I will find. Saratoga Springs certainly was one!

  1. I love the quilt and how you tied it to the hex theme and racing jerseys! I have never regretted a compromise I have made with Jim – sometimes it took me awhile to realize it was a good choice, but it always has been. Thanks for sharing this Saratoga experience – we will have to visit there too!

  2. What a fun quilt. I have to make those kind of compromises, too, but I think more often it’s my husband who compromises on my destination desires. Then he tells everyone about these new places.

Catherine, your piece about travel compromise makes me smile. This kind of compromise while travelling is one of the things that I most enjoy about venturing with my husband. Getting outside our boxes in art and travel is good. Thanks for your story.
