On a recent trip to Oregon, in addition to seeing the beautiful western coastline and some snowcapped mountains, we crossed many excellent bridges!

I took several photos thinking I might use them as references for my work. When I returned home, however, I discarded each of these literal bridge images in favor of a more personal, metaphorical concept.

The bridge in my quilt references a bridge from past to present.  My bridge is a  connection over thousands of miles. (3036, to be specific!) This construction represents a renewal and reformation of a long distance friendship. 

I’ve already completed my bridge quilt and am having a digital copy made on fabric to make a surprise gift to my long lost friend. I wish I could show you now, but I must be patient until the end of September. I will give you a sneak preview of how my process began.

I was gifted a vintage hand embroidered and hand quilted blue and white quilt.  It was in a condition beyond repair.  Wanting to upcycle this quilt somehow, I chose to use it as a base for the applique I had planned. Only tiny bits of the original quilt are visible in the newly quilted version, but you and I will know it is there!  Knowing I wanted some dark areas in my final image, I started by placing some black prints onto the ‘batting’.  These dark areas are also barely visible in the final version, but they do add depth and contrast.

先日オレゴンへ旅行した際、美しい西海岸と雪を頂いた山々に加え、たくさんの素晴らしい橋を渡りました！作品の参考にしようと思い、何枚か写真を撮りました。しかし、帰国後、これらの文字通りの橋のイメージは捨て、より個人的な比喩的な概念に置き換えました。 私のキルトに描かれている橋は、過去から現在へと繋がる橋を表しています。私の橋は、何千マイルも離れた場所（正確には3036マイル！）を繋ぐ架け橋です。この架け橋は、遠距離の友情の再生と再構築を表しています。 橋のキルトはすでに完成しており、デジタルコピーを布に印刷して、長い間会っていなかった友人へのサプライズギフトにしています。今すぐお見せしたいのですが、9月末までお待ちください。制作過程を少しだけお見せしましょう。 手刺繍とキルティングが施された、青と白のヴィンテージキルトをプレゼントされました。修理不可能な状態でした。このキルトを何らかの形でアップサイクルしたいと思い、計画していたアップリケのベースとして使うことにしました。新しくキルトを施したバージョンでは、元のキルトはほんの少ししか見えませんが、きっとそこに存在していることが分かります！最終的なイメージには暗い部分が欲しいと思っていたので、まずは「バッティング」の上に黒いプリントをいくつか配置しました。この暗い部分も最終バージョンではほとんど見えませんが、奥行きとコントラストを加えてくれます。
