Dis-unity was a difficult prompt for me to get my head around. I have written more about that on my personal blog. 

I originally wanted to create a flag quilt because I thought it might be fun to revisit that idea and make another pieced US flag, but the size restrictions did not work in my favor.

After several missteps, I decided to make a word quilt. I have long wanted to make one, and now really seemed like the moment.

I used Tonya Rucci’s Word Play book to get me started. It is a great resource for making pieced letters which is what I wanted to do.

I wanted to say something that ringed true for all times—something that celebrated those who have fought for freedom and justice and truth and have made our lives better because of their willingness to sacrifice personal ambitions for the greater good. 

I also realized that March is Women’s History Month, and that I could use the time I spent piecing this quilt to really think about and educate myself and others about the women who have worked to make this world a better place for women, children, and families. 

So, each day I shared a letter on my instagram feed.

I messed up a few times, because I failed to take a photo of the letter all by itself and I was on the road and not able to re-photograph the letter.

Today I posted my last letter.

And now I would like to share the quilt. 

It doesn’t scream Dis-Unity, but it will always be the visual I have when I think about the process I went through to create this quilt.
