Spring in Alaska is different from the lower 48. We can be well into May and still have patches of snow and ice.
I originally wanted to give the prompt Break Up because that is what I wanted to make a quilt about. I thought it might be fun to see what the other members of Cloth in Common did with the term. I know that before I lived in Alaska, Break Up had nothing to do with the seasons.
Break Up is our spring time. It is when everything melts and oozes and runs. It is a big mucky mess.
I love it because it means we are gaining light and that soon our entire world will be green and growing.
I selected a limited palette inspired by the colors I see every Break Up season—ice and snow, water and rock, blue sky and just a hint of green.
I wanted to duplicate the jagged edges of breaking ice and snow. The chaos of the season.
This quilt is crowded with ideas I am looking forward to exploring more fully in future quilts.
