I returned from my magical summer place with a heart full of the sights of the Green Mountains and the gentle sounds of the country. I had been lulled to sleep night after night with the windows open and a cool breeze on my face. I found peace in the quiet sounds of insects buzzing, the owls hooting and the peepers on the pond. Only occasionally did I hear a cow mooing or a coyote howling.

On the first night in the city, I felt the oppressive red hot heat. I refused to shut the windows and turn on the air conditioning. Loud night sounds pierced the air and disturbed me. Cars whizzed by on the busy street that borders my backyard. I even heard the highway traffic noise a few miles away with a horn honking in the distance that became blaring and obnoxious. The ambulance horn screeched by and all the sounds grated.

The sounds began to feel heavy and hot. I knew this sound intolerance was temporary but missed the gentle sounds of the country.
