Martha Ressler, “Cells” 3-6

Medullary rays are cellular structures found in some species of wood. In oak trees they are the most prominent. They radiate out from the core of the tree, across the growth rings. They strengthen the tree like a cross weave. The cells can be seen with the naked eye.

I looked at the logs on our log piles, but we don’t have any felled oaks.  Just ash trees, decimated by the emerald ash borer.

So I had to use reference images online.

I wanted to abstract my image a bit, and I wanted interesting textures and surface design. So I used stamping and printing and a mixture of machine and hand stitching.

I ordered the background light gray from Cherrywood fabrics, and arranged my composition using some images printed on cloth, and some other raw edge applique.

そのため、オンラインで参照画像を使用する必要がありました。

画像を少し抽象化したかったし、面白いテクスチャと表面デザインが欲しかった。 それで、私はスタンピングと印刷、そして機械と手縫いの混合物を使いました。

チェリーウッドの生地に背景のライトグレーを注文し、布に印刷された画像やその他の生のエッジアップリケを使用して構図を調整しました。
