Back in 1968 my parents went to Montreal on a visit. My mum went to Notre Dame  Basilica and brought back a postcard folio of this wonderful building and told us about the colours and the amazing craftmanship in the building.

Move forward to 2019 when I got a chance to go and visit Montreal and retrace mum’s visit to this amazing building. Inside I was also impressed by the craftman ship and colour within. Given this was a place of worship and visitors and worshippers were in the building together I was delighted with the reverence shown by those visiting.

So in working on my reflection piece I thought about my late mother and her journey and how she would be delighted to know I have retraced some of her steps from many years ago. In looking at the building I picked out the ceiling colour and the bronze around the carvings and how the colours sung together.

It is a whole cloth piece that I have painted in the colours first over a wooden tray that has circles that enables the circles to sit low and not be painted. I then machine quilted the piece before hand stitching it in 3 different colours – the bronze, blue and white. The thread is Wonderfil Razzle which has a great sheen to it and reflects the light beautifully.

So I feel I have honoured mums memory of her journey in my journey making this piece.
