A book “Orbital” by Samantha Harvey, is the inspiration for my submission this time

The novel unfolds over the course of a single day aboard the International Space Station, following six astronauts from different countries as they orbit the earth every 90 minutes.

The themes explored are, Fragility and Beauty of Earth; Connection and Isolation; Time and Motion; Wonder.

The novel becomes a meditation on what it means to be human when viewed from a vantage point where borders disappear and the world looks both impossible small and infinitely precious.

The book had an enormous impact on me especially as events on 28 February 2026 began to unfold in this region. Despite it being a much slower process than I anticipated, the decision to hand-quilt the whole piece was exactly what I needed as a refuge to sit quietly indoors, listening to music, contrasting the happenings outdoors.

Dimensions 40” x 35”

100% cotton. Hand-dyed, Breakdown Printed Cotton Fabrics. Hand Quilted

  1. Love the sense of movement this piece, in both the hand dyed fabrics and the shape of the pieces. All of the hand quilting gives such great texture. Just beautiful!
