Here’s the completed quilt about my lost world.

My extended family had a ranch in northern California. Although I didn’t move to California until I was a teenager, I have plenty of happy memories of the place. Picnics, family reunions and walking in the creeks. Families gathered to clean ditches, cut firewood and repair buildings. We also tried not to step in the “meadow muffins” that the cattle deposited. There was a wonderful pond created by an earth and log dam that, along with irrigating the fields, provided years of swimming and fishing.

Some of the things depicted in the quilt are my grandma’s blue VW bug, the snakes and fish that swam with us in the pond, the air mattresses my friends and I would use in our synchronized raft performances, the rings in the water created by skipping rocks, the dam, the trees with Blue Mountain in the background, dragonflies, the iron gate, the Mile Long Meadow sign painted on a saw, the old apple tree out in the field, sour-grass that my great uncle introduced to my taste buds, and the best tasting blackberries around. There was no light pollution. so the night sky was full of stars. I remember seeing dozens of shooting stars one night when I was camping there. From my house it was quite a drive, and the roads were not all as straight as the ones I put in the quilt!

In my previous post, I showed some images of the dam. Here’s a current satellite image of the meadow, with the dam (in blue) blinking on and off (refresh the page if you don’t see it). You can see that nature has reclaimed what was once was a wonderful pond.

Location of the lost world

I pieced all of the parts of this quilt. Here’s a detail.
