I live in the Netherlands, which lies partly below sea level. The area I live in is situated in the middle of the country and is intersected by wide rivers. Every winter the river rises and large areas are flooded. High dikes protect the villages. The battle against the water is as old as the area is inhabited.

Last few weeks large parts of the world suffer from the effects of hurricanes Florence, Mangkhut, typhoon Trami and a tsunami on Sulawesi. They caused of lot of trouble with strong winds and a lot of water.

But water is not only something to fight against. It’s also something to fight for, a very important aspect of life. We can’t live without water, we ourselves consist of two third of water, so does the earth. With the changing climate fresh water could be a huge problem in the future. So, as you will probably think right now, the next prompt will be “Water”.

Last winter, river Waal near my hometown Tiel, the Netherlands
