With all that is going on in the world recently, I am glad that I am in the “winter of my life”. I have accomplished many things in my life and enjoyed wonderful adventures. Art has always been a huge focus for me. It can comfort me, encourage me, frustrate me and keep me humble. It can also fill me with more questions than I care to know the answers to!

I thought about creating a piece that talked about how we as controllers of the earth should strive to “save the world”. Would I make a statement about climate change? A depiction of the beautiful earth we see around us! What about the poor, sick , the homeless that struggle everyday that should be our collective responsibility ? Well…these situations have always been with us since humans have been on earth. Money seems to be the one thing that determines who gets control. The very wealthy seem to make all the decisions about how we live on the earth. It seems we are going backwards. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer. What can ONE person do to save the world? …..Well……be kind to everyone we meet, share what we have with those that have less, do our bit to preserve the earths offerings.
My piece is about what we don’t see! The wonderful mystery of the “worlds” we know little about. The skies we stare at night that make us dream, ponder our futures , wish on the stars. Who knows what comes after? Will all these mysteries be revealed when our time here ends? Save the world? Well ……enjoy it now! The future can be scary at my age , exciting to the younger generation and it is up to them more than ever to …..Save the World!

We are so small when placed in the big picture. One little planet trying to survive. Think of the millions of stars, moons, planets that are “up there”. Have they been where we are now? Are they surviving, or struggling also?

  1. I have also thought sometimes that I am so glad I am not in elementary school, about to inherit 90 more years of what is now happening. How awful that we have to think this way. Your piece is a great reminder of how small we really are in a much larger system, and that we should act accordingly.

  2. Despite the small world in which humans struggle, this is depicted in a truly beautiful quilt.

  3. Compared to the immensity of the universe, our galaxy and our Earth seem so small and fragile. And we humans are smaller still. Perhaps the wisest thing we can do is cherish the present moment – admiring your beautiful quilt and finding joy in it while we can.

Tell us what you think.
