This prompt was not easy for some reason. Too many choices? I finally settled on one of my favourite singers, Sting, and his song “A Thousand Years”. It is a beautiful love song, with a haunting cello line in the background, and to me speaks of the eternity and certainty of love even if you lived a thousand lives and had a million chances to live your life in a different way.
This is the fist stanza:
A thousand years, a thousand more,
A thousand times a million doors to eternity
I may have lived a thousand lives, a thousand times
An endless turning stairway climbs
To a tower of souls
If it takes another thousand years, a thousand wars,
The towers rise to numberless floors in space
I could shed another million tears, a million breaths,
A million names but only one truth to face
As I was incorporating a kind of half oval, tunnel or door shape in a lot of my recent work it felt right to put a thousand doors on this piece (not a million!). I made a stamp and repeatedly stamped it on fabric that I had mono printed and screen printed first. I was actually trying to keep track of the number of doors, but at some point gave up for design reasons. There are more than 1000 doors here, if someone wanted to count.
This is my largest piece so far, at 40″ width x 30″ height, it needed to be large to get all the doors in!
