All of my quilts have stories behind (in) them.  It might be an everyday story like these two about the woodsy area where I live. ( The second being a saintly story of the time I spend picking up sticks when I really would rather be inside sewing.)

 
Many of my fiber art pieces tell a story of issues that upset me, like gun violence.

Some quilt stories are imaginative memories of experiences I’ve had, like swimming with manatees or shopping in Paris with my daughter!

Some quilts are based on snapshots of life that attracted me to capture them and recreate them in fabric.

Some of the stories only begin after the quilt is already made.  These stories and images are often purely imaginative.

This piece was made with fiber memorabilia of events and people in my life.  It contains the gloves I wore to prom, a girl scout merit badge, my high school PE bloomers (complete with my mother’s embroidery of my name in the waistband), and many other precious keepsakes. 

Although these stories have quite personal significance to me, I believe that others can often relate and bring their own experiences and imaginations to the story as well.  I look forward with delight to the end of this month when each of our Cloth in Common artists will tell us their story in cloth.
