I have a quilting colleague here in Florida who makes beautiful art from throwaway materials like plastic bags, fancy paper napkins, mesh from vegetables, etc.  Her name is Ellen Schwark and she has inspired me to try using unconventional materials in my own art.  For our Deconstruction theme, I decided to save and cut apart beautifully colored plastic bags for a while instead of recycling them.

I sorted them by their main color and was able to quickly accumulate enough to collage this medium sized art quilt and still have plenty left over. 

Here you can see that they are laid out onto a layer of gray felt on a purple upcycled bed sheet on my longarm machine.  One thing I enjoy is that this work is like a diary of our lives at the time I was saving the plastics.  World cup soccer, aches and pains, veggies and fruits for a heart healthy diet, etc. are all chronicled in the materials used. 

Never having worked with plastics before, I courageously just began stitching them without pinning, trying only to avoid sewing over my fingers.  I aimed for a landscape like background with some blue skies, green plants and brown earth.  The background went together quickly and was removed for the next step of adding details on the design wall.  Our boy Charlie enjoyed the texture of what he thought was a cat mat.

My daughter sent me a package (red!) from the Spanx company that begged to become flowers.  Yellow stripes on carrot bags evolved into butterflies.

A little paint added sparkle, pattern and contrast.

フロリダに、レジ袋、おしゃれな紙ナプキン、野菜のネットといっ​​た廃棄される素材を使って美しいアート作品を制作しているキルティング仲間のエレン・シュワルク（Ellen Schwark）さんがいます。彼女に触発され、私も自分の作品に一風変わった素材を取り入れてみることにしました。「脱構築（Deconstruction）」というテーマに合わせて、色鮮やかなレジ袋をリサイクルに出さず、しばらくの間とっておいて切り開いて使うことにしたのです。それらを主な色ごとに分類したところ、中型のアートキルトをコラージュするのに十分な量がすぐに集まり、それでもまだ余るほどでした。 写真にあるように、紫色のリメイク・ベッドシーツの上にグレーのフェルトを敷き、その上に素材を並べてロングアーム・ミシンで作業を進めました。この制作過程で楽しいのは、作品そのものが、その素材を集めていた時期の私たちの生活を映し出す日記のようになっていることです。サッカーのワールドカップ、体のあちこちの痛み、心臓の健康を考えた食事のための野菜や果物など、すべてが使われた素材の中に記録されています。 プラスチック素材を扱うのは初めてでしたが、思い切ってピン留めせずに縫い始めました。ただ、指を縫わないように気をつけることだけを心がけました。青い空、緑の植物、茶色い大地といった風景画のような背景を目指しました。背景部分はすぐに仕上がり、次の工程である「デザインウォール」でのディテール追加作業に移るために一旦取り外しました。うちのチャーリー（男の子）は、それを猫用のマットだと思ったようで、その質感を気に入っていました。 娘がSpanx社から届いた小包（赤い色！）を送ってくれたのですが、それらはどうしても花にしたくなるような素材でした。ニンジンが入っていた袋の黄色いストライプ模様は、蝶へと姿を変えました。少し絵の具を加えて、輝きや模様、コントラストをプラスしました。 Artificial（アーティフィシャル／人工的なもの） 45インチ × 30インチ リサイクル・レジ袋、ツイストタイ（結束用ワイヤー）、絵の具、糸、フェルト、綿のシーツ ミシン・アップリケ、キルティング
