Living in Niagara Falls, Ontario we have a saying…..there are three seasons….Summer, Winter and Construction! This is the norm. There are always old buildings being deconstructed to make way for a new construction. That is the tourist industry.

Just like outdated buildings , I , as an artist have outdated work. Work that did not end up the way I thought or work that is just not my best work. These lend themselves to a great opportunity to recreate something new from something old. I have recently found photos of work I did many years ago. Some good , some great and many not so good. The original ideas were still good. Recently a friend asked my wife if she could save an old quilt that belonged to her son. It was given to him as a child and he is now finishing his engineering degree. He still holds the quilt dear to him. Of course after all the years it has seen better days. My wife said of course she could. So….she saved six of the blocks and repaired them as much as she could and kept the original pattern. He loved it even though it was much smaller and hoped to keep it for his future children. The remaining left over pieces she gave to me. I cut them up and added some modern fabrics to compliment them and created a new quilt with a new look.

Of course I could not throw away the remaining tattered blocks…..
