A New Start
I feel that starting round 4 its time for a complete change away from countries (USA, Canada, New Zealand) in the last two rounds to basing this round on myself! Not sure how this is going to work but we will work through the prompts and see what it delivers.
Time to switch
With a new round beginning for Cloth in Common based on an overarching theme of CHANGE its time for me to literally have a “change of pace” which is indeed the first challenge prompt. I am trying to work out what I will personally base this series on (time is
Structurally Sound
The prompt ‘Connections’ brought me back to Christchurch, New Zealand. It is the last prompt for this round of Cloth in Common on which I have based the entire 12 quilts on my country New Zealand. The first quilt in this series was about the new city being built post
So many options
The prompt of CONNECTIONS gives me a lot of food for thought. Initially I was thinking of structural connections for buildings especially in Christchurch where post our major earthquakes all buildings were reinforced with cross like strengthening steel poles. These poles connecting to the ceilings or upper floors provided strength
Canterbury Plains
Thinking about pattern and how it relates to New Zealand I immediately thought of the Canterbury Plains. This is close to where I live and has miles of patchwork paddocks and farms leading up to the Mountains (the Southern Alps). There are parts that are barren and isolated with soil
Modern Crazy
The prompt of pattern immediately made me think of the Canterbury Plains in New Zealand. This is where I live. Flat farmland broken into paddocks with the backdrop of the Southern Alps on one side and a short distance to the sea on the other. This area clearly relates to
Punakaiki
The prompt of Lines originally had me going off in another direction but then I travelled down our West Coast just after Christmas at stopped at the Pan Cake Rocks at Punakaiki. They are spectacular! The Pan Cake Rocks are limestone formations that began forming 30 million years ago when
Lines Prompt
The next prompt for our group is “Lines”. It inspires lots of options when you are thinking about our overarching theme of “Structure. Immediately you think about lines on a road, telephone lines, building lines but what are some of the other options? I wonder if my fellow artists will
Layers
When looking at heritage as a prompt there were several options for me to consider from family, history, lineage to the loss of our historical buildings through our earthquakes. However as I looked at each it came to me that everything has layers of history past, present and future. Looking
Heritage – so many options
As I ponder the prompt ‘heritage’ and how it relates to New Zealand my initial thoughts were about the lost heritage in Christchurch post the 2010/2011 earthquakes when most of our city was destroyed and replaced by new. The interesting thing is that children of today will only ever know
Irrational Fear
When looking at this prompt and how it relates to New Zealand my immediate response was all the swing bridges on all the walking tracks throughout the country. New Zealand is well known for tracks like the Heaphy, the Abel Tasman, St James Walkway and many many more. There are
