My first thoughts on this topic turn to what is happening to our precious United States of America every minute of every day. But I digress. 

As deconstruction relates to quilting, I think of artist Paula Kovarik https://www.paulakovarik.com/ , who takes quilts that she previously made, cuts them into small pieces and sews them together in new ways to make new quilts and 3 dimensional objects. Such courage she has!!  Inspired by her method, I went through some of my art quilts that I felt were not my finest and cut them into sections. Mixing them and stitching the parts together was satisfying and easier than I thought it would be.  I especially enjoyed the back of the resulting work when I first tried this technique.  Perhaps this is because I didn’t plan the arrangement from the back, so it was completely random. 

Another time I deconstructed a quilt to build a new one is when I created the quilt Life Is Good. Using a vintage quilt that was given to me, I dissected it and used it to look like a life shattered by gunfire.  Even though I did not create the original quilt, I found it VERY difficult to cut into it! I love that you can give a very different meaning to a quilt by deconstructing and rebuilding it into something else.

In about two weeks, we will see art based on the  Deconstruction theme by Cloth in Common artists around the globe.  For my work this time, I chose to deconstruct something else besides a quilt.  I ventured into media and processes I’ve never tried before!!  Thank you, Catherine, for challenging us with this prompt.

「脱構築（Deconstruction）」 このテーマについて最初に思い浮かぶのは、私たちが大切にしているアメリカ合衆国で、日々刻々と起きている出来事のことです。……おっと、話が逸れてしまいましたね。 キルティングにおける「脱構築」といえば、アーティストのポーラ・コヴァリック（Paula Kovarik：https://www.paulakovarik.com/）さんが思い浮かびます。彼女は以前制作したキルトを細かく切り刻み、それらを新しい方法で縫い合わせて、全く新しいキルトや立体作品を作り出しているのです。彼女のその勇気には本当に感服します！彼女の手法に触発され、私も自分の過去の作品の中から「会心の出来とは言えないな」と感じていたアートキルトをいくつか選び、切り分けてみることにしました。それらを混ぜ合わせ、つなぎ合わせていく作業はとても充実感があり、思っていたよりもずっと手軽にできました。特に、初めてこの技法を試した際、出来上がった作品の「裏側」の表情がとても気に入りました。裏側の配置までは計算していなかったため、完全に偶然が生み出した模様になったからかもしれません。 キルトを解体して新しい作品を作った別の例として、『Life Is Good（人生は素晴らしい）』という作品があります。譲り受けたヴィンテージキルトを解体し、銃撃によって打ち砕かれた人生を表現するためにその素材を使いました。元のキルトを自分で作ったわけではないのに、ハサミを入れるのは本当に勇気がいることでした！キルトを解体し、別のものへと作り変えることで、全く異なる意味を持たせることができる――その点に私はとても魅力を感じています。 あと2週間ほどで、世界中の「Cloth in Common」のアーティストたちによる、「脱構築」をテーマにした作品が公開されます。今回の私の作品では、キルト以外のものを解体することにしました。これまで試したことのない素材や制作プロセスに挑戦してみたのです！！キャサリン、このようなテーマで私たちに挑戦の機会を与えてくれてありがとう。
