I got an inspiration I got during my trip to Portugal. I couldn’t help but notice the beautiful flowering bushes that broke up the cobblestones and stone homes in the ancient city of Óbidos. A guide told us that the flowers were mandated by the dictator Salazar (until his overthrow in 1974).  The physical beauty would mask the cruelty of his rule, or so he thought. 

People still plant beautiful plants among the stones, but now it is for nature’s sake.

This piece starts with a photo I took in this beautiful old town.  I desaturated parts of it in Photoshop, and took it to a printer in Mohnton who does dye sublimation printing.  We had to print it in two parts to fit his press, so I then had to combine them. Then the fun began.  I added bits of bright purple, pink and green fabrics and some “found embroidery” to boost the color, and did quite a lot of hand embroidery before starting the free motion machine work.

ポルトガル旅行中にインスピレーションを得ました。古代都市オビドスの石畳や石造りの家々の間を、美しい花が咲き誇る茂みが目に飛び込んできたのです。ガイドによると、これらの花は独裁者サラザール（1974年に失脚するまで）によって植えられるよう義務付けられたそうです。サラザールは、その美しい景観が彼の統治の残酷さを覆い隠すと考えていたのです。

今でも人々は石畳の間に美しい植物を植えていますが、今は自然のために植えられています。

この作品は、この美しい旧市街で撮った写真から始まりました。Photoshopで写真の一部を彩度を下げ、モートンに住む昇華プリントをしてくれる「私の友人」に持ち込みました。彼の印刷機に収まるように2回に分けて印刷する必要があったので、私はできる限り2つの部分を組み合わせて印刷しました。そして、楽しい作業が始まりました。鮮やかな紫、ピンク、緑の布地や「拾った刺繍」を加えて色を強調し、フリーモーションミシンで作業を始める前に、かなりの量の手刺繍を施しました。
