My world has been rocked recently in many more ways than one.  The main event that has captured my attention is  a complex and lengthy open heart surgery performed on my husband on April 1st.  Having spent the better part of  the last six days in our local hospital, I am reminded of the power and skill of doctors and nurses and their support teams to save lives in this world.

I have pondered how to adequately thank the surgeon (and team) for saving my husband’s life.  I try to imagine what it was like in the operating room, ‘harvesting’ veins and arteries to stitch around the blockages in his main arteries.  How those stitches must be so very tiny and carefully and securely done.  And how they must have prepared everything needed to keep Jim alive while they were working on those bypasses and later, while they were replacing and repairing his heart valves.  And I’m so grateful to the anesthesiology experts for their skill in keeping him sedated and pain free during this ten hour procedure, and for bringing him out of that state.  They joked that they would be sending him on a vacation to the golf course in Pebble Beach, California!

I also marvel at the dedication and compassion of the nurses who have been taking care of him following the main event on Wednesday.  They are able to handle all the patients’ needs with grace and expertise, and often a sense of humor.  And they do this tirelessly, working more than twelve hour shifts.  I still wonder if the dear surgeon was able to grab a few quick breaks sometime between the 7am start and the 4:45 finish of the job he did that day.
Even the lady who came every day to mop the floor took the time to wish a blessing on my husband and a healthy recovery.

Each of these heroes has saved my world, and that of so many people every day of their working lives.  As my dad often remarked, “There’s a special place in heaven . . .”

世界を救えるのは誰か？ 最近、私の世界は幾重にもわたる出来事によって、大きく揺さぶられました。中でも私の心を強く捉えて離さないのは、4月1日に夫に対して行われた、複雑かつ長時間に及ぶ心臓の開胸手術のことです。ここ6日間の大半を地元の病院で過ごす中で、私は改めて、この世界で人々の命を救う医師や看護師、そして彼らを支えるチームの持つ力と技術の偉大さを実感しています。 夫の命を救ってくださった執刀医（およびそのチーム）に対し、どうすれば感謝の気持ちを十分に伝えられるだろうか、と私は思いを巡らせています。手術室の中では一体どのような光景が広がっていたのか、想像を巡らせてみます。夫の主要な動脈に生じた閉塞（詰まり）を迂回させるために、血管を「採取」し、縫い合わせていくその様子を。その縫い目は、どれほど微細で、かつ慎重かつ確実に施されたことでしょう。また、バイパス手術や、その後の心臓弁の置換・修復手術を行っている間、夫の命をつなぎ留めるために必要なあらゆる準備が、どれほど周到になされていたことでしょう。さらに、麻酔の専門家の方々にも心から感謝しています。10時間にも及ぶ手術の間、夫を鎮静状態に保ち、痛みを感じさせないように管理し、そして無事にその状態から覚醒させてくださったその卓越した技術に対して。彼らは冗談交じりに、「彼をカリフォルニア州ペブルビーチのゴルフ場へ、休暇の旅に送り出しておきましたよ！」と言って笑わせてくれました。 水曜日の大手術を終えた後、夫の看護にあたってくださっている看護師の方々の献身と慈愛にも、私はただ感嘆するばかりです。彼女たちは、患者一人ひとりのあらゆるニーズに対し、優雅さと専門知識をもって、そして時にはユーモアを交えながら、的確に対応してくれます。しかも、12時間を超えるシフト勤務をこなしながら、疲れも見せずにそれを続けているのです。あの素晴らしい執刀医の方は、朝7時に手術が始まり、午後4時45分に終了するまでの長い一日の間に、ほんのわずかでも休憩を取ることができたのだろうか――私は今でも、そんなことを考えてしまいます。 毎日病室の床掃除に来てくれる女性でさえ、わざわざ立ち止まって時間を割き、夫の無事と健やかな回復を祈る言葉をかけてくれました。 ここに挙げた「英雄」たち一人ひとりが、私の世界を救ってくれました。そして彼らは、自らの職業人生における一日一日を通して、実に多くの人々の世界を救い続けているのです。父がよく口にしていた言葉が、今、脳裏に蘇ります。「天国には、特別な場所が用意されているものだよ……」と。
