I heard recently about a possible book banning in the Peel School District west of Toronto. During the periodic “weeding” of books – physically deteriorated – perhaps to be replaced by newer editions, it appeared that some troublesome banning might be taking place during that process, for example of the Diary of Anne Frank and the Harry Potter series.

A group called ‘Libraries not Landfills’ has protested, and the Ontario Education Ministry called a halt to the weeding of this book until it could be clarified. But this brought to mind other bannings of Anne Frank’s diary, for example for being “pornographic” or too troublesome for young people.

Having just visited Amsterdam and the secret annex where she and 6 others lived for 2 years, and since I’m currently re-reading the book, I wanted to make a quilt with this theme. But how? That’s the question!

The only thing I can think of right now is that my working title is “For Restoration of Good Sense.”

And– I apologize – I’m traveling right now and will not be able to add the Japanese translation. (BGarner posting here at the request of Martha Ressler)

  1. My favorite book as a 10 or 11 year old. I think I read it 13 times and, in my effort to learn more about Anne Frank and her historical circumstances, learned how to do library research in magazines…and eventually became a librarian! You can imagine how I feel about book banning in general and about the banning of this book in particular!

Tell us what you think.
