This prompt was a great opportunity to play with one of my favourite design elements – line. As I stated in my previous blog post, “Doodling lines“, I love to play with lines in mark-making. For this quilt, I decided to go with different-width lines that I mono-printed with the help of my largest-size gelatin print plate. I gathered different materials to use as resists for the printing.

The thinnest lines are the result of using a string, the medium-sized lines are done with cassette tape, and the larger lines were different kinds of ribbons. I placed the materials on the gel plate and printed several layers.

In the picture above you can see that I also used the ghost prints or second prints from the plate so the fabric structure of the ribbon is visible.

To unify the piece I decided to applique a wide organza ribbon on top of the whole-cloth construction.

The quilting is kept very simple, to not add more busyness to this piece.

  1. The layers of detail are very intriguing, and I would like to watch you work and see this in person. It tells me there is a whole new world out there in printing and I need to explore it. I just raced out and bought a gel plate so I can play too.

    1. Thank you Bronwyn! Be careful, gel printing is hugely addictive ;)). I’m glad you like the technique, it is my favorite thing to do.

  2. I thought I had fun making my line piece, but I think you had more fun than I did!! I love the variety you achieved – each of your detail images would be a fine composition by itself. Nice how the thick ribbon ‘tied’ it al together in the end. Well played, Regina!

  3. So excited by this beautiful colour play and laying of the lines, Regina… every inch has it’s story and I am still searching. I want to stand in front of this piece to explore one day…
