There are so many possibilities for Urban nature.

Community gardens, roof gardens, parks, green spaces, and back yards are all dear to my heart. I’ve been influenced by Doug Tallamy’s work promoting the benefit of people’s  individual yards when planted with native plants as an invitation to pollinators and wild life.  They will come! We’ve been carrying out his ideas for several years now, and have our own little oasis friendly to birds, insects and animals.

But I think I will do something from an inspiration I got during my trip to Portugal. I couldn’t help but notice the beautiful flowering bushes that broke up the cobblestones and stucco homes in the ancient city of Obidos. A guide told us that the flowers were mandated by the dictator Salazar (until his overthrow in 1974).  The physical beauty would mask the cruelty of his rule, or so he thought.

People still plant beautiful plants among the stones, but now it is for nature’s sake.

  1. That is a beautiful place; I haven’t been to Portugal before. My husband will blame you for me wanting to go now! Those flowers also grow riotously where I live and we have that same color in our backyard. Off to the corner though as they have nasty thorns that burn if they scratch you. Can’t wait to see what you chose for your subject – not long now!
