Nietzsche said that “invisible threads are the strongest ties” and while Nietzsche is one of the most controversial philosophers of his time, his quote seems appropriate for this, my last post for Cloth in Common. As several members have written, we are wrapping up Round Three (Structure) with our Connections prompt. Our quilts will be posted towards the end of May. Round Four will start in June with a new overarching theme and some exciting new prompts. So stay tuned.

I feel incredibly fortunate to have been part of this talented group of 12 artists for the past 2 ½ years. It is exciting to see, every two months, how differently we interpret each prompt and yet maintain cloth in common. Some of us have never met in person – partly due to the pandemic and partly due to distance. Because of these invisible threads and our passion for making quilts, we are connected.

But I have decided, after what will be 15 quilts, to leave the group. And, as my time with Cloth in Common winds down, I could not help but reflect on all the awesome people I have had an opportunity to connect with. I’m particularly grateful for Karol and her leadership of our group. It has been wonderful getting to know her and her landscapes, still lifes and portraits in cloth.  And I’m grateful for the wonderful, kind, creative friends – old and new – who are members of the group.

I’m looking forward to seeing all the quilts for our connection prompt. It seems a fitting final prompt to remind me that we will remain connected in invisible, yet incredibly strong ways.

  1. Wow. I wonder how many total pieces there are in all of your Cloth in Common quilts. A bazillion, I’ll bet. Thank you for your participation in the group. We will miss your strong voice!

  2. I have not had the pleasure of meeting you in person Susan, and want you to know that your stunning quilts/wise shared posts have been a huge inspiration during my time with Cloth in Common… and the wisdom of Nietzsche is truly a reminder of the importance of our CIC connections. The connections we have had do live on…

Tell us what you think.
